Andrew Black BVSc

Focus: Breeding, Ambulatory

Andrew grew up in South Australia on a dairy farm not far from the beautiful waters of Victor Harbour. By the age of 7 he was a regular participant at local gymkhanas, and it was to no one’s surprise that after completing his secondary education at an Adelaide Boarding School that he would set his sights on an equine vet career. Andrew completed his Vet Science degree at Sydney University in 1966. He was lucky enough to meet his wife Sarah in his last year of study, and they were married not long after.

Andrew joined the Equine Practice of the late Peter Irwin and Associates (Adelaide) after graduating and has been in equine practice ever since. During his years in Adelaide, Andrew was regularly seen as the attending vet at local thoroughbred race meetings and the Royal Adelaide Show. Andrew later became a partner at the Salisbury Highway Veterinary Mixed Practice.

In 1986, after 20 years in Adelaide, Andrew sold the practice ‘to go farming’. Andrew and Sarah found the perfect property in Forbes, NSW, close to the polo fields (a favourite hobby of Andrew’s), and made it home. In 1990, Andrew joined the local Tynam Pastoral Company as their primary vet, looking after the polo ponies, and running their breeding program. Whilst still retaining the family farm in Forbes, Andrew and Sarah later moved to Mittagong in the Southern Highlands, where Andrew was welcomed to SHEC Pty Ltd in 2011.
